Join us for this panel and Q&A hosted by Cambridge UCU to discuss the Government’s Higher Education White Paper, its sweeping plans to turn universities into privatised and marketised hubs for the ‘knowledge economy’, and more positively, how we can develop alternative visions of the value and future of higher education in the UK.

Our four speakers, including two contributors to The Alternative White Paper for Higher Education, will discuss the likely impact of the government’s proposed reforms to UK universities, the Teaching Excellence Framework, the implications of the White Paper for underrepresented groups, and how we might find a way forward. Each speaker will deliver some introductory remarks, to be followed by an open Q&A and discussion.

Attendees may wish to consult The Alternative White Paper for Higher Education beforehand.

Speakers:

  • Stefan Collini (Professor of Intellectual History and English Literature, University of Cambridge. Member, Council for the Defence of British Universities)
  • Kerry Harman (Director, Higher Education Introductory Studies at Dept. of Applied Linguistics and Communication, Birkbeck. Contributor to ‘The Alternative White Paper)
  • David Midgley (Emeritus Professor of German Literature and Intellectual History, University of Cambridge. Member, Council for the Defence of British Universities)
  • Sean Wallis (Senior Research Fellow, UCL. UCL UCU VP & UCU NEC Member. Co-editor of ‘The Alternative White Paper’)
